Pterophyllum scalare

7 Dec

You can really see the notches in the dorsal fin of the Silver Angel. Is that the "scalare" or is it their stripes?

The  Angelfish was given a beautiful scientific name. Pterophyllum scalare

First we have Ptero, which means winged.

Add phyllum which means leaf and you get Pterophyllum ,”winged leaf”‘. Winged leaf, isn’t that fantastic! Perfect!

Like a Pterodactyl, which is “winged finger”.

The scalare part can mean staircase or ladder. It is said to refer to the top fin, the dorsal, having little stair-like notches, but it seems just as likely that the “ladder” reference is actually to the black stripes, a horizontal ladder-like pattern.
